My hopes were not fulfilled. The next days passed without much incident. But my narrow bunk was empty most of the time. There was plenty of room for me at Ben’s side. Here, we found time for long talks—and some other things as well.

A few days later we reached the port of La Rochelle in France. Ben wanted to visit some business partners here. The ship was supposed to pick up fresh provisions and set out to sea again in two days. The Margarita sailed into the port with a Union Jack flapping proudly from the mizzen gaff. A few spectators had gathered on the jetty to watch the foreign ship arrive. A quick glance around the ship convinced the captain that everything was in its proper place. He undertook the difficult maneuvering in the packed harbor himself.

“All hands on deck!” he turned towards the upper deck. “Clear sails to furl! Leave the jib, mizzen, and topgallant sails flying. Go, go, you loafers. Get to work.”

The well-drilled sailors reacted immediately. Like weasels, they sprang up the masts and climbed back down while the men on deck grabbed hold of the ropes to furl the sails. Then the first staysail rolled up, and the surface of the square sail rapidly grew smaller. The ship gradually approached the pier. As in every harbor of the world, workers were standing by the water to pick up the lines. First, a throw line was tossed from stern onto land. Then the heavy aft line followed. A large man in a colorful, half-open shirt picked it up and expertly tied it to the nearest post. Once all lines were tied, the gangway was laid out. Shortly afterwards, the first harbor workers brought new provisions on board. The trip was well-planned, and Ben’s business partners had been awaiting the Margarita for days.

“Can I go explore the city with Ahmed?” I asked Ben excitedly. “He told me that some relatives of his live here and he really wants to visit them.”

“First I would like you to watch over the first loading with me. I wanted to explain to you what you need to watch out for. Handlers in foreign ports always try to pull a fast one. Then you can head off with Ahmed. But be back by dawn at the latest. There’s lots to get down in the next couple days. But I can understand that you’d like to feel firm ground beneath your feet again. Even after all these years at sea, it’s still the same with me.”

Ben was in a good mood, I could see that. Maybe it was because the heavy of burden of his lie was no longer wearing down on him.

In the afternoon, I followed Ahmed through the winding city streets. When we reached a long, white wall he suddenly stopped and knocked at an inconspicuous door. An instant later, a small hatch opened at eye-height. After a brief nod on Ahmed’s part, a few words I couldn’t understand, the door opened.
